Arbeloa Defends Bold Call As Madrid Edge Atlético In Derby Thriller

Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has acknowledged deliberately taking a cautious stance in his team selection during the club’s 3-2 derby win over Atlético Madrid. The decision to leave Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham on the bench, despite both being declared fit, drew attention as Los Blancos chase Barcelona in the La Liga title race.

Madrid’s victory was crucial, but the absence of two marquee players from the starting lineup became the main talking point. Bellingham had just returned after missing ten matches, while Mbappé was cleared to play following recovery from a knee sprain. Arbeloa introduced Mbappé in the 64th minute, replacing Thiago Pitarch, and brought Bellingham on ten minutes later for Arda Güler. The gradual reintroduction of both stars reflects Arbeloa’s careful management at a decisive stage of the season. Madrid remains four points behind Barcelona with nine matches left.

Speaking after the match, Arbeloa admitted the difficulty of balancing a squad filled with elite talent. He described his role as one that requires “being unfair” at times, explaining that every player deserves more opportunities than he can provide. His priority, he said, is ensuring all members of the squad feel trusted, even when selections are limited.

On Mbappé, Arbeloa noted the forward’s strong impact after coming on and expressed confidence that he would gain further minutes with France during the international break. Bellingham’s return, however, presents a tactical puzzle. Arbeloa emphasized the need to reintegrate the 22-year-old midfielder in a way that maximizes his connection with teammates. He highlighted Bellingham’s versatility as both a strength and a challenge, since his wide skill set requires careful positioning to serve the team’s needs.

The international break now shifts focus away from domestic competition. Mbappé will join France, while Bellingham links up with England. Both fixtures serve as preparation for the upcoming World Cup, but Arbeloa will be monitoring his players closely, hoping they avoid setbacks. Their fitness will be critical when Madrid resumes their demanding schedule.

Mbappé currently leads the La Liga scoring charts with 23 goals, underlining his importance to Madrid’s attack. Bellingham’s creativity and ability to dictate play add another dimension to the squad. Together, their form could determine whether Madrid can close the gap on Barcelona and reclaim the top spot before the season ends.

In summary, Arbeloa’s calculated decision to ease Mbappé and Bellingham back into action reflects both caution and strategy. While the derby win keeps Madrid in contention, the coming weeks will test whether his approach pays off in the title race.
