Concern Over Fans Extreme Expectations – Anthony Taylor

Anthony Taylor has been officiating at the highest level since February 2010, marking over a decade of experience as a top-flight referee.

This past summer, Taylor was among the officials at the Club World Cup held in the United States, where matches were played under sweltering conditions. He described the heat as being on “a completely different level to what you’re normally used to.”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca echoed the sentiment, calling it “impossible” to conduct normal training sessions during the tournament. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez added that he felt “dizzy” while playing in what he called “very dangerous” heat.

“It was absolutely brutal,” Taylor admitted. “We were really fortunate to have undergone significant preparations before leaving the UK, including environmental chamber training. The conditions were incredibly challenging.”

With next summer’s World Cup set to take place across North America, Taylor remains cautiously optimistic. “I don’t think it’ll be a major problem if we’re able to prepare properly, as others have done. It’s essential that individuals ensure they’re ready.”

Now in his 17th season as a Premier League referee, Taylor still finds immense joy in his role. “When it comes down to it, it’s one of the best jobs in the world,” he said. “You’re right in the centre of the action in the most exciting league in the world.”

As for how much longer he plans to continue officiating, Taylor is uncertain. “I’m 47 next week, which is quite old for someone at this level, especially when you’re chasing players half your age,” he joked. “The main goal now is to ensure we have two strong refereeing teams ready for the World Cup in America next year.”
