Popular Nigerian filmmaker and actress, Funke Akindele, has set a new record as her latest movie, Behind the Scenes, has become the first Nollywood and African film to gross over ₦2 billion in cinema sales.
FilmOne, a leading Nigerian film distribution company, announced that the movie generated ₦2,103,039,706 within just one month of its release in cinemas.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), FilmOne revealed that the achievement further confirms Funke Akindele as Africa’s most commercially successful filmmaker. The record also makes her the highest-grossing producer, writer, and director in West Africa’s history.
According to the distributor, Akindele has also become the first filmmaker to rank number one at the African box office for three consecutive years, a feat no other filmmaker on the continent has achieved.
Reacting to the milestone, Funke Akindele shared a celebratory video on her Instagram page on Monday evening, expressing gratitude to God and her fans.
“We have every reason to thank God. ₦2 billion and counting is not a joke. Ladies and gentlemen, Behind the Scenes to the world,” she said.
She further thanked her supporters for their loyalty and contribution to the film’s success.
“Joy overflows, my heart is full of gratitude to God and my amazing fans. Reaching this incredible milestone and still counting would not have been possible without you. I’m deeply grateful,” she added.
The success of Behind the Scenes further strengthens Funke Akindele’s position as one of the most influential and successful figures in the African film industry.
