Fury Says Joshua’s Tragedy Inspired Boxing Comeback

Tyson Fury has revealed that the tragic deaths of two close friends of his long-time rival, Anthony Joshua, played a pivotal role in his decision to return to boxing. The incident, which occurred in December when Joshua was involved in a car crash in Nigeria, claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Fury described the event as a turning point, reminding him of life’s fragility and the importance of seizing opportunities while they exist.

The 37-year-old former two-time world heavyweight champion had retired after suffering consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024. He spent more than a year away from the ring before announcing his comeback on January 4. Fury is now set to face Russian-born Arslanbek Makhmudov on April 11 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, marking his first fight in 15 months.

Speaking at the stadium, Fury reflected on the tragedy and its impact on his outlook: “Tomorrow might not ever come, and I suppose the biggest turning point in this comeback for me was the tragedy that happened with Anthony Joshua. You should never put things off until tomorrow, or next year, or next week, because tomorrow is not promised to anybody.”

While speculation about a future clash between Fury and Joshua has long captured public attention, any plans for a meeting in 2026 have been put on hold. Instead, Fury emphasized that his return is driven by a desire to “make boxing great again,” criticizing the sport’s decline in excitement since his retirement.

His comeback not only reignites anticipation among fans but also underscores the reflective nature of his decision. By linking personal tragedy with professional ambition, Fury’s return carries both emotional weight and sporting significance, setting the stage for a highly anticipated bout in April.
