Liverpool’s shock 2-1 defeat to Wolves at Molineux has sparked fierce criticism from club legend Steven Gerrard, who did not hold back in his assessment of the team’s performance. Speaking on punditry duty for TNT Sports, Gerrard described the display as “really poor” and accused the Reds of lacking both tempo and quality. He singled out the attack as the most glaring weakness, urging manager Arne Slot to hand 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha a starting role in Friday’s FA Cup rematch against Wolves.

Ngumoha, who came off the bench late in the game, impressed Gerrard with his energy and directness, contrasting sharply with Cody Gakpo’s ineffective showing. Despite his £44 million price tag, Gakpo struggled to make any meaningful impact, while Ngumoha’s brief cameo injected urgency into Liverpool’s play. Gerrard argued that the teenager had “done more in a short cameo than Gakpo in 65 minutes” and insisted Slot must give him the chance to lead the line. For Gerrard, Ngumoha represents the spark Liverpool desperately need to reignite their faltering attack.

The former Liverpool captain also turned his attention to defensive lapses that proved costly. Wolves’ opening goal came from a straightforward ball to the target man, which Gerrard felt should have been easily dealt with by Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk. He criticized the lack of awareness and organization at the back, noting that such basic errors are unacceptable for a team with Liverpool’s ambitions. The second goal, resulting from a poor pass by goalkeeper Alisson Becker and a sluggish defense, further highlighted the backline’s fragility. Gerrard warned that unless Liverpool tighten up defensively, their hopes of progressing in the FA Cup will be slim.

Inside the Liverpool camp, the mood was equally downbeat. Manager Arne Slot admitted the result was “another setback” in what has become an inconsistent season. Van Dijk, meanwhile, was candid in his post-match reflections, acknowledging that the team had been “slow, predictable, sloppy in possession and guilty of wrong decision-making.” The defeat leaves Liverpool vulnerable in the league standings, with Chelsea poised to leapfrog them into the top five should they beat Aston Villa.

The pressure on Slot is mounting as Liverpool faces a congested schedule. After Friday’s FA Cup tie, they return to Premier League action with a crucial clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield. With Champions League qualification hanging in the balance, Slot must find a solution to Liverpool’s attacking and defensive woes. Gerrard’s endorsement of Ngumoha adds another layer of intrigue, as fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if the teenager is given the chance to prove himself on a bigger stage. For Liverpool, the coming week could define their season, and the call for fresh energy and sharper defending has never been louder.
