Hands Off, Real Madrid! Chelsea To Reward Caicedo With Big New Deal

Chelsea have begun talks with Moises Caicedo over a new, more lucrative contract to ward off interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid. The move comes as Caicedo, described as “world-class” by head coach Enzo Maresca, has become a key figure since his £115 million ($154m) arrival from Brighton in 2023. His emergence as one of the Blues’ best players has been driven by his improved defensive output, increased on-ball influence, and consistency under Maresca.

After a difficult first season, Caicedo has flourished into a dominant force, winning Chelsea’s Player of the Season award for 2024-25. And the Ecuador international’s stellar form stems from his defensive prowess, including tackling and interceptions. He expertly reads the game and recovers the ball in dangerous areas, providing a crucial shield for Chelsea’s backline. This stability allows attack-minded players like Cole Palmer (when fit) and Joao Pedro to thrive. To boot, he has added goal contributions to his game, scoring some impressive long-range efforts already this season, including a rocket against former suitors Liverpool before the international break. His enhanced ball-playing ability also helps Chelsea progress the play through the thirds under Maresca’s tactical system, cementing his place as a complete midfielder.

Discussing the 23-year-old’s form, Chelsea and England star Joe Cole said: “He’s the best midfielder in the world between the boxes, and he’s improving at both ends of the pitch as well. I think he’s absolutely brilliant. In terms of breaking up play, playing it through the lines, being intelligent, driving the team forward, he’s also adding goals to his game, and he scores great goals. I’m struggling to think of somebody I’d want in my midfield better than him at the moment, I really would. And that’s a massive shout. But I wouldn’t swap him for anyone now at Chelsea.”
And ex-Liverpool and Three Lions defender Jamie Carragher said recently: “He wouldn’t be the best for me, if you’re talking about an all-round midfield player, I would say Declan Rice would just pip him. I think he’s just got an extra little bit of quality with the ball. But there’s no doubt – not just this season but from Christmas onwards last season – Caicedo has been as good as anybody in the Premier League.”

Caicedo’s current £150,000-per-week contract already runs until 2031, with an option for an additional year, but the Blues are eager to secure his future with improved terms through a higher salary or new bonus structure, rather than an extension to the duration, according to GiveMeSport. The report also states that Caicedo is keen to remain at Stamford Bridge, despite reported interest from Real Madrid.

Caicedo is in the form of his life in west London and the next few weeks, after a strong start to this season, will determine how successful the Blues will be. They face a busy and crucial period until the New Year, balancing domestic fixtures with the Champions League. They currently sit fifth in the Premier League table and the return of injured players like Palmer and Liam Delap will provide a major boost to their attack. Maresca knows he must rotate his squad effectively to manage the heavy workload, particularly with European commitments. Upcoming key fixtures include London derbies against Tottenham and Arsenal in November, as well as Barcelona. The January transfer window will offer an opportunity to address any squad weaknesses. Navigating this demanding schedule while integrating recent signings will be vital for a sustained league and European push.
