Nigeria’s Special Eagles have advanced to the final of the football event at the inaugural West Africa Zone A and B Para Games in Abeokuta after securing enough points from the group stage, where the hosts continued to dominate both on the field and in the overall medal standings, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Matches resumed on Monday with Cameroon defeating Benin in the opening fixture of the day. Liberia then recorded one of the tournament’s biggest wins with a 7-0 victory over Benin in their second match of the competition.

The final group game ended goalless between Nigeria and Liberia, a result that ensured both sides progressed to Wednesday’s final, which will take place alongside the closing ceremony at the MKO Abiola Stadium.

Nigeria, who had earlier beaten Cameroon 1-0 on Sunday and thrashed Benin 11-0 in their opening match, remain one of the favourites for the title.

Their solid defensive display against Liberia was enough to secure their place in the championship decider.

Beyond football, the host state continued to make a strong impression across multiple events.

The country remained at the top of the medal table heading into day three, buoyed by four gold medals as local athletes delivered standout performances across the venues.

Kebbi’s para-badminton athlete Ibrahim Tukur added to Nigeria’s medal haul by winning gold in his category at the West Africa Para Badminton Championship.

The one-handed player, who represents the CST/KBTV Badminton Club in Birnin Kebbi, has risen swiftly in the sport over the past year and is widely regarded as one of the country’s most inspiring emerging stars. His club officials praised his determination and described him as a symbol of motivation for athletes living with disabilities.

Excitement also remained high across Ogun State as the wider Games continued to gather momentum.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, said the debut edition was already leaving a powerful impression on athletes and spectators.

He described the event as a chance to showcase the resilience and talent of para athletes across the region and highlighted Ogun State’s commitment to delivering an inclusive sporting spectacle.

Ghana also made a strong impact on day three of the Games after winning eight medals to boost their standing in the continental competition, which has drawn more than seven hundred athletes from West and Central Africa.
